Dr. Lazo received a doctor of philosophy in Developmental and Child Psychology specializing in Applied Behavior Analysis from the University of Kansas. At the University of Kansas she worked with children diagnosed with Emotional Behavior Disorder/Severe Emotional Disturbance using functional assessments, and designing and implementing behavioral programs in general education settings. Dr. Lazo was also part of a multidisciplinary team at the KU Medical Center assessing and diagnosing children with autism. Prior to her time in Kansas, Dr. Lazo consulted in the design and implementation of applied behavior analytic programs for children and adults with developmental disabilities. Currently, Dr. Lazo is part-time lecturer at California State University, Los Angeles. She also serves as a member of the board directors for the California Association for Behavior Analysis. Dr. Lazo has over ten years of experience in the field of Applied Behavior Analysis and has presented a number of times to professional organizations. Dr. Lazo continues to work towards assisting individuals with developmental disabilities maximize their potential and live in the least restrictive environment.

 
Joyce C. Tu, Ed.D, BCBA Print

Dr. Tu received a doctor of education in Educational Psychology specializing in Applied Behavior Analysis from West Virginia University. Dr. Tu has over ten years of experience providing trainings and supervisions for behavior consultants to provide services to both school district and regional center clients. Services include training and workshops to teachers, instructional aides, and parents on implementing behavioral procedures, discrete trial teaching methodology, the Picture Exchange Communication System, functional/behavioral assessments, generalization training, verbal behavior, and task analysis when teaching complex behaviors. Her specialization and research interests are in the area of verbal behavior. Dr. Tu works internationally and has developed several classrooms that provide services to children with autism in China. Dr. Tu has presented a number of times to both national and international professional organizations.

 
Staff Training Print

Staff Training (New and Ongoing). CBS Inc. will implement a competency based training to ensure quality behavioral services. Staff will undergo written and hands-on training. Once staff is able to pass CBS Inc. tests covering basics in applied behavior analysis with 80% accuracy, they will then begin the hands-on training. The hands-on training will consist of role-plays, observations, and demonstration of treatment fidelity. Following new staff training, staff will also receive ongoing training through once a month workshops, weekly overlap with behavior consultants, quarterly overlap with the clinical director(s), and attendance to professional conferences in related service area.

Where applicable and to ensure generalization of skills to job performance, each staff will be formally tested. The tests will include correct verbalization of instructional methods; 80% or above competency in simulated conditions (i.e. role-playing); 80% or above score on inter-observer reliability checks; and 80% or above score on treatment fidelity. Ongoing staff training will also occur during monthly staff meetings, and supervision sessions. Staff will be provided with research articles and will be encouraged and supported to participate in professional conferences at the state, national, and international levels. In addition all staff holding a certificate with the Behavior Analyst Certification Board will be required to obtain 36 hours of mandatory continuing education every three years in order to maintain board certification. This mandatory requirement will also ensure continued ongoing staff development.

The Center for Behavioral Sciences receives funding from regional centers and school districts. CBS conducts functional assessments to develop interventions. ABA is the primary mode of treatment. The Center for Behavioral Sciences can diagnose and assess Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Asperger Syndrome, or other pervasive developmental disorders.
